IP65 and IP66 look like a one-digit difference, but that digit represents a real, tested difference in water protection — not a rounding error between two roughly equivalent numbers.
An IP (Ingress Protection) rating under IEC 60529 has two digits: the first covers protection against solid objects and dust, the second covers protection against water. Both Litenza's IP65 and IP66-rated products score a 6 on the first digit — fully dust-tight, no ingress at all. The difference is entirely in the second digit.
A 5 in the second position means the equipment is protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction — a sustained spray, but not the full force of a powerful jet.
A 6 means protection against powerful water jets from any direction — a meaningfully higher bar than IPX5, tested with significantly more water volume and pressure.
Both ratings cover genuine outdoor, wet-weather use — this isn't a case of one rating being unsuitable outdoors. The practical difference shows up in more extreme exposure: direct high-pressure water contact, equipment washdown procedures, or sites with unusually intense water exposure beyond typical rainfall. For most site conditions, IP65 and IP66 equipment both perform reliably; IP66 simply carries additional margin.
