Inadequate lighting on industrial sites is responsible for a significant proportion of workplace accidents in India. Before every night shift, site supervisors and safety officers should run through a systematic lighting check to ensure every work zone is properly illuminated and all equipment is functioning correctly. Use this checklist as a starting point for your site's safety protocol.
1. Power Level Verification. Check the charge level on every battery pack, or the fuel level on any diesel equipment still in service, before the shift begins. Calculate whether the available power is sufficient for the full duration of the shift, including a buffer — on Litenza towers, this means confirming enough charged battery packs are on hand, or that an AC driver connection is available if extended runtime is needed.
2. Lamp Functionality Test. Power on every light tower and confirm all lamp heads are operational. LED arrays should reach full brightness immediately. Check for any dead lamps or flickering and replace before the shift starts.
3. Mast Height and Angle. Confirm each tower's mast is elevated to the correct height for the required coverage area. Verify that lamp heads are angled correctly to illuminate the work zone without creating glare for workers.
4. Coverage Zone Mapping. Walk the entire work area and verify there are no dark zones between lighting positions. Areas of shadow greater than a few metres should be addressed with additional towers or repositioning.
5. Electrical and Cable Inspection. Inspect all power cables, USB outputs, and connectors associated with any wired lighting systems. Check for damage, exposed conductors, or moisture ingress. Do not operate damaged electrical equipment.
6. Tower Stability and Anchoring. Confirm each portable tower is stable on its footings or outriggers. On soft ground, use base plates. In windy conditions, verify legs are fully deployed and locked — Litenza towers are rated to Level 8 wind resistance when properly set up.
7. Emergency Lighting Provisions. Identify the location of backup lighting equipment — a handheld unit like the LI-S3 is ideal — in case of primary tower failure. All workers should know the location of emergency lighting equipment at the start of each shift.
8. Proximity to Hazards. Check that no light tower is positioned within unsafe proximity to excavations, overhead power lines, or areas of chemical storage. Maintain a minimum clearance as per your site safety plan.
9. Glare Assessment. Stand at all worker positions and vehicle routes and check for glare from incorrectly aimed lamp heads. Glare impairs vision and reaction time — adjust any lamp causing direct eye exposure.
10. Access Route Illumination. Verify that all access and egress routes — including emergency evacuation paths, vehicle routes, and pedestrian walkways — are adequately illuminated for the full shift duration.
11. Maintenance Record Review. Check the maintenance log for each light tower in use. Any tower due for scheduled servicing or with outstanding maintenance issues should not be deployed until the work is completed.
12. Worker Briefing. Brief all workers at the start of the shift on the location and operation of lighting equipment. Workers should know how to report a lighting failure and what to do if a light tower becomes unstable.
