Industrial Site Lighting Checklist: 12 Things to Verify Before Every Night Shift

Inadequate lighting on industrial sites is responsible for a significant proportion of workplace accidents in India. Before every night shift, site supervisors and safety officers should run through a systematic lighting check to ensure every work zone is properly illuminated.

Pre-Shift Lighting Checklist

1. Fuel Level Verification

Check fuel levels on every diesel light tower. Calculate whether available fuel covers the full shift duration plus a 20% buffer. Top up any tower below 25%.

2. Lamp Functionality Test

Power on every tower and confirm all lamp heads are operational. LED arrays should reach full brightness immediately. Replace any dead or flickering lamps before the shift starts.

3. Mast Height and Angle

Confirm each tower's mast is at the correct height and lamp heads are angled to illuminate the work zone without creating worker glare.

4. Coverage Zone Mapping

Walk the entire work area and verify there are no dark zones. Address any shadows greater than a few metres with additional towers or repositioning.

5. Electrical and Cable Inspection

Inspect all power cables and distribution boards for damage, exposed conductors, or moisture ingress.

6. Tower Stability and Anchoring

Confirm each portable tower is stable on its footings or outriggers. Apply guy wires or additional ballast in windy conditions.

7. Emergency Lighting Provisions

Identify backup lighting equipment locations. All workers should know where emergency lighting is kept at the start of each shift.

8. Proximity to Hazards

Check no light tower is within unsafe proximity to excavations, overhead power lines, or chemical storage areas.

9. Glare Assessment

Stand at all worker positions and vehicle routes and check for glare. Adjust any lamp causing direct eye exposure.

10. Access Route Illumination

Verify all access and egress routes — including emergency evacuation paths and pedestrian walkways — are adequately illuminated.

11. Maintenance Record Review

Check the maintenance log for each tower in use. Do not deploy any tower with outstanding maintenance issues.

12. Worker Briefing

Brief all workers on the location and operation of lighting equipment and how to report a lighting failure.

Post-Shift Procedures

  • Log hours run on each diesel tower against its service schedule

  • Note any faults in the maintenance record

  • Refuel tanks that dropped below 30%

  • Lower masts and secure lamp heads before demobilisation
